iPhone ireland launch
On the 14th of March Apple launched the iPhone in Ireland also Austria to a lukewarm reception. Apparently the basic phone is price at just over £300 and the data plans are slightly restrictive.

- The iPhone UK will be exclusive to 02 and can be bought for an upfront fee of £269.00 on an 18month contract. Monthly contract fees range from £35 to £55 dependent on the minutes but all come with unlimited data usage.
- Partnered also with the carphone warehouse, so you’ll be able to grab it there.
- Network technology will be edge which is hella slow and there is no Starbucks iTunes music Store announced as yet.

O2 have also released some figures stating that 80% of their high volume users have stated they would be willing to switch to an iPhone contract. I’m not sure what they consider high volume but I’m thinking a much lower amount of their users won’t want to plump £269 and THEN have to pay £35 on top of that.

There is also a conflict potentially between this and the ipod touch, which has in itself iPhone like capabilities. Will the general public really pay that much to switch to the iPhone when they can pay a one off fee for the ipod touch and have it for life without monthly fees ?

Only time will tell but in support I have more than one friend who has mentioned there anticipation of the iPhone uk.

A new piece of open source software developed state-side but proved to work with both UK based providers Vodafone and 02 has recently become available. The question now posed is whether to wait for the official UK iPhone release and unlock from there or too seek an iPhone from abroad and unlock before the official UK release.

The quest to unlock the iPhone started before it was even released as it was announced it would be exclusive to one operating network in the states and almost complete success has been achieved.

The early software release is very much in beta and is not 100% accurate. In fact there is no Graphical Interface at the moment which would make it inaccessible for the majority. We’ll be keeping on eye on it and hopefully within the next week or two we’ll have a full and frank guide of how to get your hands on a brand new, unlocked iPhone in the uk before its official release date.

Well you’ll just have to wait. This post is a warning to readers that may be overcome with excitement and actually believe that the iPhone is unlocked and you can buy it from America before the UK release date.

The facts are that even America can not yet use the iPhone on any carrier of their choice and may never be able too. So european network selection isn’t even on the horizon yet.
